Maxine Elizabeth Abernathy, 75, 1415 Liberty St., Covington, died at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997 in United Samaritan Medical Center, Logan Campus, Danville, Ill. She was born July 6, 1922 in Fulton Township, Fountain County, the daughter of John Dayton and Hope Cook Coffing. She married Orville Abernathy Oct. 30, 1940 in Henderson, Ky. He preceded her in death on November 22, 1992. She was a life resident of Fountain County and resided in Covington since 1965. She was a graduate of Kingman High School. She was a homemaker. Her hobbies were cooking and her flowers. She was a member of West Liberty Church of Christ, the Friendship Garden Club, the Republican Women's Club. She was very active in the Republican Party. Surviving, are: two sons, Ronald L. (Judith K.) Abernathy, Cayuga; Alan D. Abernathy, Covington; a sister, Doris Hensley, Danville, Ill.; three brothers, Joe H. (Sylvia) Coffing, Kingman; John M. (Shirley) Coffing and Robert W. (Barbara) Coffing, both of Covington; two granddaughters, Hope Elizabeth (Steve) Carlson, Mahomet, Ill.; Melanie Lee (Phillip) Jennings, Cayuga; two great-grandchildren, Audra Carlson, Mahomet, Ill.; Patrick Lee Jennings, Cayuga; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lois Cissell; and two infant brothers. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, with the Rev. Scott Tageson officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. tonight. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington.
